What to do when it rains in Abersoch

As with many coastal destinations, Abersoch is often its most appealing in the blazing sunshine.

But when the weather unexpectedly turns soggy, you may wonder: what is there to do in Abersoch? I can help with that.

Indoor activities

If getting soaked to the bone isn’t quite your idea of fun, it makes sense to stick to the indoor activities. So, whether you’re just a group of pals, romantic partners, or have young children to entertain, here’s some inspo for your rainy day agenda.

Play a game

Starting simple, we have plenty of board games already on offer at Tawelfor. Just check the dining room drawers for some family favourites, suitable for all ages. Think monopoly, snap, dominoes…these can kill a few hours and inspire some healthy competition!

With young ones, why not round up some small toys or even clean shells and form your own treasure hunt? Just no chocolate or biscuits please…we don’t want those stuck down the sofa.

There are some great (free) digital games for groups too, with apps like Heads Up, Psyche or Quiz Up. Specific to our lovely Tawelfor Cottage, you can also connect your Xbox or PlayStation to the TV if you’ve brought it with you.

Try that new café

If you’ve spotted a cute place to grab a coffee or lunch on your travels, it might be the perfect day to call in! The owners will almost certainly be happy to see you as passing trade can often be quiet when the weather isn’t so good. Plus, a sea view is cool in any weather – try The Cove or Zinc Bar in Abersoch, or Dylan’s and Caldwalder’s in Criccieth.

Movie marathon?

Check if your accommodation has a DVD player before you go, or a TV that will let you log into your Netflix, Amazon or other streaming account. Provided you’re not on a ‘digital detox’ holiday, a movie marathon with tasty snacks is not a bad way to spend a day! Plenty of the local restaurants now do takeaway too, so why not grab an indulgent dinner and recreate that scene from Home Alone?

Pack your favourite books

For those who prefer less screen time, make sure you bring a selection of your favourite books and hunt down the cosiest reading spot in your accommodation. Getting lost in a novel to the pattering of raindrops on the window is every romantic’s dream and an amazing way to unwind. Combine this with your favourite hot drink takeaway from the local café, a blanket and some snacks – definitely my idea of heaven.

Visit Glasfryn Parc

Don’t let the wet weather stop the action. Particularly good for families, Glasfryn Parc is a short drive from Abersoch, just outside the main town of Pwllheli. Book a lane for Ten Pin Bowling and grab some food afterwards at the restaurant. Fingers are crossed for the Soft Play Centre reopening over summer, too (closed due to Covid). Archery, Crazy Golf and more activities are available here but are outside – crazy golf is arguably more crazy in the rain!

Marvel at the butterflies in Pili Palas

If you don’t mind a day trip, I would recommend Pili Palas Nature World in Anglesey. This is probably a family activity too, but I wouldn’t rule it out if you’re just a fan of animals in general. No one is too old for butterflies, looking at tarantulas or meeting baby goats (but that’s just my opinion). You can find their website here and decide whether it’s for you!

Anglesey Sea Zoo is also available, but doesn’t quite match the standards of Pili according to online reviews.

Take it underground

Another one in the ‘day trip’ category, Wales is famous for its mining history and some are still in action waiting for you to explore. The Slate Mines in Llechwedd offers tours which include the world’s most preserved slate mill and a chance to get up close and personal with the old mine chambers. **Currently closed due to Covid. Updated 5th July 2021**

King Arthur’s Labyrinth is also an option and is open as of July 2021, though a bit further away (approx. 90 mins from Abersoch). Booking is advised and includes boarding an underground boat as you sail deep beneath the mountains of mid-Snowdonia. Sounds cool, right?

Outdoor activities

If you’ve got your raincoats and wellies to hand, or you were planning on jumping in the sea anyway, outdoor activities can also be a great way to spend a rainy day in Abersoch. Some of the best options include:

  • Still go to the beach (walking, sandcastles, building dams)

  • Crabbing or rockpooling

  • Surfing, kayaking or paddleboarding (always be safe if going in the water and wear life vests where appropriate)

  • Visit the nearby castles (Caernarfon or Harlech)

  • Go for a big walk in the countryside

  • Catch the views at the top of Mount Snowdon

What to do on a rainy day?

Well, there you have it. I hope you feel inspired even if the weather has turned slightly less glorious while visiting this corner of Wales. Or if you’re planning a trip with a not-so-great forecast, I hope you feel more excited to visit knowing there’s still tonnes to do.
