5 Things To Do In Abersoch

One of my favourite things about our little corner of North Wales is that you can truly do a bit of everything.

Sunsets on the beach never get old.

Sunsets on the beach never get old.

Whether you want an exhilarating adventure full of activities, a jam-packed holiday with the kids, all-day sessions in an array of beachside beer gardens, or you’re planning on becoming the definition of relaxation, you can do that here.

And to prove it, I’m bringing you my 5 favourite things to do whilst staying at our lovely Tawelfor Cottage in Llanbedrog.

1. Take a stroll down the beach

In at number one is of course the most common thing to do when visiting a beachside village. That early stroll before the rest of the world wakes up, the excitable clashing of buckets and spades, the haze of sunset on the horizon, the late-night walk back from the beach bar…the beach is ready for you. Rain or shine, day or night, take in the salty air and appreciate life to the soundscape of waves crashing onto shore.

2. A lazy morning with brunch

If a relaxed get up is more your thing, why not head into Abersoch for brunch? There are a fair few options, but if you’re after some stunning views with your pancakes I’d recommend two places in particular:

  • The Little Tea Rooms: Head to the far end of Abersoch Main Beach and have breakfast overlooking the bay.

  • Zinc Bar: With a huge terrace (sheltered in the colder months) over Abersoch Harbour, this is another ideal spot for idyllic brunch vibes.

3. Beach hop ‘til you drop

This can be done in the car or walking straight from the front door of Tawelfor. For a nice starter, plan a few hours to walk from Llanbedrog Beach, over the headland past The Tin Man, drop onto the Warren Beach, then carry on to Abersoch for a well-deserved snack or drink in the village. (Taking the sand all the way at low tide or nipping up to the main road to get onto Abersoch Beach when the tide is high).

For those wanting to venture further afield, follow the coast past Abersoch to Porth Ceiriad, Porth Neigwl, Porth Ysgo and Traeth Aberdaron. Or hop over the peninsula to explore Traeth Morfa Nefyn, Traeth Porthdinllaen and a personal favourite of mine; Traeth Porthor (also known as Whistling Sands). There’s plenty a beach to hop, with days of adventure to be had!

Porthor, or Whistling Sands, is a hidden gem and a long-standing favourite of mine.

4. Grab an ice cream

Wales is never short of incredible quality ice cream to tuck into. Many places have also branched into sorbets and dairy free options. Here are my personal favourites for proper Welsh ice cream:

  • In Llanbedrog, check out Llanbedrog Beach Bar or the Glyn Y Weddw pub.

  • In Abersoch, head over to dedicated ice cream shack, in The Vaynol’s beer garden, or enjoy your ice cream beachside, at The Little Tea Rooms.

  • Criccieth Cadwaladers ice cream café: I’ve been going specifically to this shop since I was small (though it’s part of a chain it still has some of the best ice cream sundaes around).

5. Get soaked in the surf

Fancy an invigorating dip in that fresh Welsh ocean? There are several places to hire equipment like paddleboards, kayaks, surf boards and body boards, to suit all sizes and abilities. Or book an expert surf lesson from the professionals at West Coast Surf Shop in Abersoch. If you are thinking of booking, I’d get in as soon as you can, as lessons fill up fast and run only April to October.

Lastly, make sure you always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid when out on the water, and I would always consider a wetsuit if it isn’t August!

Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth) is the most popular beach for surfers in Abersoch.

More of a chilled bean vibe?
