Crystal clear turquoise waters, tasty places to eat, fun for all the family… here are seven of the UK’s most stunning coastal towns you must consider for your next UK getaway.

A location growing in popularity, Portree is known for its colourful waterfront houses (in Portree Harbour) and quirky shops and restaurants. The island of Raasay to the east offers some shelter from the rest of the Atlantic for the bay of Loch Portree, on which this calm seaside town is nestled.

The surrounding landscape of the Isle of Skye is full of breath-taking scenery with plenty of walking trails and miles of deep blue waters.

2. St Ives, Cornwall

St Ives is a popular destination amongst holidaymakers around the world. With white sands and turquoise ocean, you can’t go wrong visiting this stunning spot.

As well as quaint pubs and shops, St Ives also has a rich history. According to legend the area was name after St Ia, who sailed from Ireland to Cornwall on a leaf in the 5th Century. St Ia built an oratory on what is now the site of the St Ives Parish Church.

3. Whistable, Kent

Tankerton Beach is the first go-to spot if you’re visiting Whistable. Here you’ll find the famous multi-coloured huts and lush green hills.

Whistable itself boasts plenty of cute shops and cafes and a whole host of seafood restaurants – there’s a reason this area is famous for its oysters! If you’re particularly sophisticated, you can also take afternoon tea at Tankerton Towers, a vast 1790’s stately home with manicured gardens and lawns. Here’s some more things to do in Whistable.

4. Portmeirion, North Wales

A destination that looks oddly out of place in the UK, Portmeirion offers a taste of the Mediterranean just a few hours’ drive from the northern city of Manchester.

Though the village is a private resort, as opposed to an actual town, it most definitely deserves a mention for its beautiful architecture, private gardens, gallery, shops, restaurants and even a spa. If you’re looking for something a little closer to home that still offers the holiday feel, why not explore the resort?

5. Salcombe, Devon

Salcombe is located within the South Devon Area of Natural Beauty, and you can see why. Sitting on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary, white and blue buildings stack up the hillsides that kiss the water below.

With its own gin distillery, tasting bar and gin school, Salcombe is more than your quiet seaside town. Many families enjoy the array of watersports available, such as paddle boarding, as well as plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to explore. More info on Salcombe.

6. Abersoch, North Wales

Abersoch has become one the most popular holiday destinations in the UK thanks to its crystal clear waters and miles of coastal walks.

Like Salcombe, the Abersoch area offers something for every type of holidaymaker. Whether that’s a luxurious cottage with views over the harbour or hilltop camping spots with a stunning panorama. You’ll also find plenty of places to eat delicious food with a view, hire boards and kayaks, grab a boat ride or shop around for souvenirs. What to do in Abersoch.
